Implementation Tips
- Programs that provide in-house or contracted transportation services should develop comprehensive bus transportation policies and procedures and training that address:
- A schedule for regular maintenance of all vehicles
- Pre-trip bus inspections
- Proper use of child safety restraint systems in school buses
- How to make sure contact information is up to date
- Use of sign-in sheets to ensure staff only release children to authorized adults
- Active supervision strategies for bus monitors, including inspections at the end of every trip to make sure there are no children on the bus
- Pedestrian safety education around buses
- Protocols for transporting children with disabilities and special health care needs
- Bus evacuation drills and other emergency protocols
- Develop and communicate drop-off and pick-up protocols to staff, contractors, volunteers, and families. Make sure that everyone understands and follows instructions about safe, supervised drop-off and pick-up points and pedestrian crosswalks around the facility.
- Share safety tips with families about the importance of choosing and always using a car seat that is right for their child’s age, size (height and weight), and developmental level. You can also help families:
- Get a car seat and find a certified child passenger safety technician to help them install and use their seat correctly.
- Learn stop, look, and lock strategies to ensure they never leave their child in their vehicle.
- Practice pedestrian safety. Share strategies to help families stay safe when they walk, ride, or take public transportation.
